Destroyed synagogues of Berlin: Friendenstempel Halensee

I finished the first of my new series “Destroyed synagogues of Berlin”, depicting the Friedenstempel (temple of peace) in Halensee, Charlottenburg.

The synagogue was inaugurated on 9. September 1923 and provided space for 1450 people with men and women seated separately. Services were a kind of mixture of liberal and orthodox rite, with orthodox worship accompanied by a mixed choir and organ music. In addition, a purely orthodox service was offered in an outbuilding.

The synagogue was burned down by the nazis during the November pogroms in 1938, but not completely destroyed. It remained deserted till it was demolished in 1959. An apartment building was then erected on the same site.
