Synagogue Kottbusser Ufer (today Fraenkelufer) in Kreuzberg, Berlin. The main building was destroyed during the 1938 pogrom (Reichskristallnacht) and the ruins were removed in 1959. The youth Synagoge (on the left) survived and is today a thriving Berlin Synagogue. Details >>>

Synagogue Münchener Strasse, Schöneberg, Berlin. Interior damaged during the November 1938 pogrom; the building was damaged during an Allied air raid but remained largely intact; the building was demolished in 1956. Details >>>

Synagogue "Freiheit" (Freedom) in Köpenick, Berlin. During the November 1938 pogrom the synagogue was devastated, looted and set on fire by members of the SA. Additional damage by Allied air raids made it unrecoverable and it was completely demolished after 1945. The Hebrew inscription reads "And this is the gate of heaven". Details >>>

Synagogue in Fasanenstrasse in Charlottenburg, Berlin. During the November 1938 pogrom the synagogue was burned dow. The ruin was further damaged by Allied air raids in 1943. In 1957 the synagogue was replaced by the building of the Jewish Community Centre. I added the Hebrew inscription “Men from your midst shall rebuild ancient ruins, You shall restore foundations laid long ago” (Isaiah 58:12). Details >>>

New Synagogue (Neue Synangoge) in Oranienburgerstrasse in Central Berlin. During the November 1938 pogrom the synagogue received relatively little damage and services were held up to January 1943. Damaged by Allied air raids 1943-45 only the front section without the historic main hall and sanctuary remains. Contains today a small prayer room where regular services according the liturgy of the conservative Masorti movement are conducted. Details >>>

Synagogue of the Reform Congregation (Reform Temple) in Johannisstrasse in central Berlin. During the November 1938 pogrom the synagogue was partially destroyed, then restored and used again between 1941 and 1942 when it was forcible closed. The building was destroyed by Allied air raids in 1943. The main inscription over the entrances was in German ("Heilig dem Ewigen", Holy to the Eternal). Details >>>

Synagogue Levetzowstrasse in Berlin Tiergarten, now Moabit. During the November 1938 pogrom the synagogue was only little damaged, and it was used up to October 1941 for services. Afterwards is was misused as a collection point for the deportations to the concentration camps in the East. Damaged by Allied air raids 1943-45 it was demolished in 1955. . The inscription over the entrance was בית יעקוב לכו ונלך באור יהוה: “The House of Jacob, let’s walk together towards the light of G¨d”.
